Now HERE's the sort of intelligent, character-driven science fiction I crave. Boring? Did I hear a certain other critic call MOON "boring" and then go on to reiterate how boring it was half a dozen different ways? Yeah, well, he also hated SUNSHINE--just remember that.
MOON will only play arthouses, and is a gust of wind that will dissipate instantly against the TRANSFORMERS, etc. onslaught. But it's a gripping, provocative story worthy of Rod Serling--and it's a tour de force by Sam Rockwell, who essentially carries it as a one-man-show (but things aren't that simple, as you'll see).
The similarities to SUNSHINE (and DARK STAR and SILENT RUNNING before it) are noteworthy (though MOON is nowhere near as violent as SUNSHINE; its "R" rating derived from language alone)--there's an ecological reason for this isolated moonbase to exist, and a friendly robotic assistant voiced by Kevin Spacey (imagine "Gerty" as the truly helpful HAL) helps keep our protagonist (Rockwell as Sam Bell) from going stir-crazy as he nears the end of his three-year shift. Live communication from Earth has been rendered unobtainable, and Sam must rely on delayed video greetings from the wife and daughter he left on Earth.
But then there's an accident while Sam checks on the moon "harvesters." And Sam wakes up in the infirmary. Gerty doesn't want him to leave the base, but he finds a way. And he finds...
What follows is a truly intense conflict drama that makes full use of the science fiction trappings--the modest special effects (incorporating some truly excellent trick photography) are bolstered by generous widescreen photography, a compelling score, and questions that linger long after the revelation of the truth behind the goings-on.
Seek MOON out--you won't be disappointed. Well, unless you're you-know-who.

Thanks for putting this thread up. Although I didn't read your post until after I watched it, the title reminded me that I just discovered yesterday that it was playing here in town and today I had an unexpected day off, so voila! I just got back from seeing and it was awesome! It definitly has that whacked out, paranoia feel of a Twilight Zone episode. Not many actors can (mostly) single handedly pull off an entire movie alone, but Sam Rockwell, as usual, has it down pat and Kevin Spacey as the oddly hilarious, low tech-emoticon version of 'Hal' was perfect.
Definitly go see this!
