The Innocents

Man, what a fantastic movie! Certainly the best horror movie I've seen this year. And I'm surprised that I've been watching horror films so long, and this is 44 years old, yet I'd never heard of it until now. I kept thinking of both Village of the Damned (the children were quite eerie) and Carnival Of Souls (the ghost scenes had a surreal feel to them) while watching it. Also had "The Haunting" in mind quite a bit since I've always read that movie was so creepy, but it had nothing on this one, imo. After a woman goes to take care of two children (who are almost freakishly well behaved), she begins to see apparitions on the grounds of the house "Probably the biggest house in the world!" proclaims the girl, Flora. The boy, Myles, suggests that big houses have plenty of room for secrets. Growing up in a small house, the governess can only imagine that he's right.

I got this from nicheflix on an Australian dvd, but it's due out here in the States 09/06/05. It might not be a must buy (especially if you prefer more modern movies) but it's certainly must see.

ps- I'm pretty sure some of the music from this was adapted and used by Current 93 on their album "Soft Black Stars". Can't seem to find any confirmation/acknowlegement though.

Sounds pretty interesting. I'll have to netflix it when it comes out.

In a completely unrelated topic, speaking of atmospheric old movies, I saw Haxan for the first time last weekend and it kicked my ass. That movie is long on atmosphere. It is severely heavy and huge in scope like a D.W. Griffith movie.
