Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.

Post by Kimberly »

Eh...

Godzilla's pecks looked like breasts! And the whole Mothra dying while the larvae happens to be born just as she's dying... was like right out of Rebirth of Mothra... just wasn't a very memorable entry.

Has Final War been released yet?

I'm always up for a new Godzilla movie, but truth be told, it's been a while since I've really been impressed by any of them.

I like them all but never really expect to be blow away or anything. I just watched Godzilla vs. Mothra: The Battle For Earth last week. The reviews on the imdb made is sound like a classic, but I thought it was a rather pedestrian entry overall. I wish I had seen it in Japanese though. It seemed almost as if the cast of MST3K did the dubbing. Incidentally, I find myself actually liking Mothra more than Goji if that sounds possible. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because it's character seems to be being handled in a more consistent way. No on again, off again, good guy/bad guy stuff. Eh, who am I kidding, it's the cute girls and catchy tune....

I'm not sure if Final Wars is available yet overseas, but I heard it was pretty crummy anyway.

As for me, I thought TOKYO S.O.S. was a marked improvement over the previous entry (GODZILLA AGAINST MECHAGODZILLA)--not to mention the only direct sequel in the entire Millennium series!

It's a nostalgia kick--this doesn't just go back to REBIRTH OF MOTHRA. This is actually a remake of the 1964 classic GODZILLA VS. THE THING/GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA when it comes down to it (and it has one of the original MOTHRA cast members back in character, in case you missed that). Think about it: instead of a giant egg washing ashore, you have Godzilla's bones embedded in Mechagodzilla's mechaskeleton. Then the fairies show up, and instead of "Please return the egg," it's "Please return the bones!" Same trajectory for Mothra and her twin caterpillars... it's a surprisingly subtle entry, but it's a nice warmup for the promised grand finale.
