The 1961 film “The Colossus of Rhodes” is a historical adventure movie directed by Sergio Leone. It tells the story of a Greek hero named Darios who visits the island of Rhodes during the Hellenistic era, when the island has just built a giant statue of Apollo to guard its harbor. Darios becomes involved in two different plots to overthrow the tyrannical king of Rhodes: one by Rhodian rebels who want to restore democracy, and the other by Phoenician agents who want to conquer the island. Darios has to face many dangers, including the Colossus itself, which has a secret weapon system inside. He also falls in love with Diala, the daughter of the statue’s creator, who is killed by the king’s men. The film ends with a climactic battle between the rebels and the Phoenicians, during which an earthquake and a storm destroy the Colossus and most of the city. Darios and Diala manage to escape and sail away together
