I've not read the book...

I know nothing about the events that inspired...

Why was this movie made? Maybe I'm getting softer in my old age, maybe it was made to cash in on the recent popularity of so called "torture porn". All I know is all this movie made me do is cringe, yell at my tv "OH MY GOD!" and cry.

I really just didn't see the need for this movie... it was horrible and sadistic.

If anyone could point me in the direction of the actual events, I'd appreciate it.

I figured the point of the movie was to simply make a movie about (ie. show the world) some of the details of a somewhat notorious case of child abuse but your thread got me wondering what the real story was. I think that what were probably the worst parts of the movie, the rape and the blow torch, were fictional as there was no mention of either in anything I read, the fact that it was adapted from a true story (but mostly based on the novel which was "loosely based" on the real story, I would imagine) is just something that is supposed to more believable, I guess. Anyway, when I was reading last night I found some decent articles about Sylvia Likens (the abused girl) and Gertrude Baniszewski (her "guardian") on Wikipedia. I assume they contain, more or less, the whole story. I read somewhere else, on a forum I believe, that the boy who tried to help her was also entirely fictional.
