Sonar (the software)

Post by Blake NWR »

I've been cracking into Sonar 8 Producer Edition over the last week and like it so far. It's been pretty user-friendly, which for me is awesome since I have a slow learning curve with stuff like this. Everything's laid out well on the screen, though sometimes I wish I had a second monitor. I'm just doing simple multitracking by myself; no live instruments yet (if ever) so my setup's simple - Korg, firewire mixer, PC. Tried MIDI for a bit, but that's gonna take some time to wrap my head around.

Anyone else use Sonar? Thoughts? Comments? Seen anything better/worse?

I had it, but couldn't find out how to make any sound come out of the speakers from it.

I use and really like Sonar. Dual monitors make all the difference in the world. I've actually found that it runs better on Vista than on XP. All of my wave data is stored on a server share, and Sonar/Vista has no problem running even 20 audio tracks. XP, as much as it hurts me to admit, couldn't do that.

I also use Sonar's "staff view" along with Drumkit from Hell to write drum tracks. It's tedious, but it beats dealing with a human drummer anyday!

Off topic, but have you had a chance to use Windows 7 beta? Just wondering if they actually fixed how fucked Vista is.

I have tried it, but not on my main workstation at home. I'm debating whether or not to put Windows 7 on there.

Vista isn't that bad once you do some tuning on it. Disabling UAC makes Vista much more pleasant. I'm really liking Win 7's full XP emulation though. That makes me all warm inside.

I Love Sonar. I'd love it more with a better computer.

Hodge, have you tried the Ampeg SVX plugin with it? It's a badass plugin for bass tracks.

Haha, that's funny you mention it; I just installed DKFH last night and been having a ball. If it's good enough for Meshuggah and Devin Townsend, it'll work just fine for me! :D

From what I've heard, the staff view leaves much to be desired. But I'm a total control freak when it comes to my own music, so I'll deal with it. Plus, the Cakewalk forums are amazingly helpful --- none of the elitist "LOL stoopid n00b" crap.

Are there any extra drum tones available somewhere for DKFH? I'd like a different kick tone, but can't get it out of what I've got thus far.

I've downloaded the beta but haven't played around with it yet. If it's as solid as Server 2008, I'll be a happy camper. Part of me thinks Vista got a bad rep from being a brand new OS. I know some people here on the forums work at MS, so nothing against you; I'm sure you tested as much as you could.

There are tons of extra drum samples at http://www.toontrack.com/ezx.asp

As for the staff view, I've been using Cakewalk Pro Audio (which evolved into Sonar) since 1994. I used the staff view then to control my synthesizers and drum machines, so I'm just used to it. When you get a drum part the way you like, play around with the Groove Quantizer. It sometimes wrecks the drum part (thank God for Undo!), but other times it totally brings realism and groove into a MIDI drum track. Love it!

Not yet. I'll probably check it out when I start my next project. I started out with a pretty sweet bass tone on the Buttafuko album so I didn't need any stupid plugins:D.

I've been building all of my drum parts with Guitar Pro, then importing the midi into Sonar. I've only just begun to fuck with all the MIDI capabilities of this thing.

Hey Joe... Do you leave port 139 open on your firewall as well as disable UAC?

Windows 7 is pretty damn cool. Been using it since Feb now and I really dig it. No particular problems either although I probably wouldn't run it on a DAW.

Yeah. So's I can share my midget porn folder with the world.

I have a stateful packet inspecting hardware firewall between my computers and the intertubes. I'm willing to sacrifice UAC's security to make Vista less woman-like (nagging) and more pleasant to use.

Cool for you but maybe not great advice for the general public. Especially those members of the general public who believe that the IT department exists to clean every stupid ass piece of shit spyware off of their personal PC for free.

If you happen to get a hold of EZ Drummer (DKFH is an expansion pack for this), it will make that process pretty easy - you can create a part in it, then just drag and drop into Sonar. When I get home I'll post some screenshots (or PM you if they end up too big).

I actually run UAC all the way up. Not that I don't trust my firewall, but most exploits are coming over port 80 and I doubt if every bit of code coming through is scanned no matter whose you are using. It's kind of a pain to have to OK every change to the drive, but you KNOW about it every time it happens. Check this article out:

That's pretty cool. I'm going to watch all of those videos in there.

As for my paranoia... At work, I lock everything down and assume all users are total computer illiterate nimrods who will click on anything they see online, because 90% of them are just that. At home though, I disable UAC and don't even run antivirus or antispyware software. All of my documents and anything important reside on my CentOS Linux server that's armored to the teeth. My domain/workstation account does not have write privs on it. I have to enter a different set of credentials any time I want to write anything. That's a slight pain, but in my opinion its less so that when the workstation OS is getting paranoid about every little thing. This way, I can get nailed by a nasty exploit (and it's happened a few times now) and it won't harm anything important. I'll just reimage my HD and be back in biz.

Back on topic... :D

Does anyone know any good choir VST plugins? I've tried looking for Spectrasonics' Symphony of Voices, but it's over $400 and can't seem to, uh, locate it anywhere else. :D

One word: Omnisphere. Worth every penny. Blows every hardware synthesizer I've ever heard out of the water.
