Cloverfield

Post by Kimberly »

Did a double feature today... Cloverfield being one of the films.

So, how was it? Did it live up to it's hype... I thought so.

Hella fun!

The highlight of the movie....

So, movie's over and I go to pick up my purse and the bottom of it is wet. I smell, smell is a little off... wipe on my pant leg. Touch bottom of bag again, smell... repeat (you get the idea). I'm like smell... hold hand to bf's face then again to my gf's face. They thought it didn't smell like anything. Said someone's soda just prolly spilled. We start walking up the aisle and THEY WERE WRONG! There it was... a runny, chunk filled pile of vomit. I ran to the restroom like my ass was on fire.

Good times...

*shudder*

I liked it a lot. Since I've been a fan of Toho movies since I was little I've often had dreams of being in a city during a giant monster attack. The movie was very similar to my dreams so I could really relate :)

Well, I'm glad I listened to you. It would have been wrong of me to pass up CLOVERFIELD, but I almost did just that--simply because I was fed up with the hype.

That's my problem these days... when I sit through a 'teaser' trailer, especially one that doesn't even give you the TITLE of the film, let alone a look at the monster, I don't feel curious or intrigued. I feel... well... teased. And ANNOYED.

I got the wrong idea about CLOVERFIELD because of the "hide the monster" game--as if only by buying a ticket would I be allowed in on the big mystery of what the thing bloody well LOOKED like. And I didn't want to play. But I DID say that if enough of you told me it was worth it...

Turns out CLOVERFIELD isn't "about" revealing the monster, though he does give you one hell of a payoff before the movie's over. And I was hip to the "shaky-cam" thing a long time ago--never mind THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT... CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST itself leaves a HUGE stamp on this one. Luckily for me, I'm not prone to vertigo or nausea watching such films on the big screen, but the risk IS there, just so you know.

The story and the characters are, obviously, nothing new. But just as with the (remarkably similar when you think about it) ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM, I found it refreshing to deal with "just plain folks" as opposed to The Science Patrol or The G-Force... I wasn't caught up in their party/romance drama one little bit, but that's okay, because it wasn't OVERWRITTEN that way. I still got a sense of who these people were--and if I was going to follow anybody's experience through this event, it might as well have been them. And of course we're going to follow the ones who behave irrationally and get into the thick of things. Sure--we could follow someone who simply marched out of town with the military escort. But is that why you bought a ticket?

There's a very effective device involving 'checking the tape' and leaving spurts of previously recorded footage mixed in with the new events...

And here's the clincher--when it comes to the depiction of the devastation, the monster attacks, the unpredictable consequences--you know, good old-fashioned shock value? CLOVERFIELD has it all, plain and simple. I was caught up in the movie from beginning to end and was left to acknowledge once again that savvy filmmakers can take ANY ancient concept and still make it seem new.

Dramamine advisory may be in order--but go.

And thanks again for the tip.

Saw it tonight and thought it was great. Not too original story-wise, but it was great to get the "view from the street" during one of these monster rampages for a change. The whole initial attack right up to the scene on the bridge was amazing. I didn't really care much for the little mini monsters, but it wasn't that big a deal to me. Definitely a good time and well worth seeing on the big screen. And while there isn't anything to see after the credits, do stick around for the music that plays over them. It's more than a little inspired by Akira Ifukube.

I liked it, it was fun. No regret of spending time, gas and money to watch it.

It turned out to be exactly what I thought it would be. The thing now, is to go back and catch all the little things in the background that is going on during the movie.

Good times :)
