I couldn't believe how good the last Rocky movie was. Looks like the final Rambo is gearing up to be another good, and brutal, one...! :metal:

It looks like one of those Italian Rambo clones that used to regularly populate the 80s(mainly from Anthony Dawson and Bruni Mattei),that just happens to have Sylvester Stallone in it(as well as the violence of a Bruno Mattei film).

Nice catch! Strike Commando rocks! It's funny. For years I didn't want to admit how much I liked these old hollywood action flicks, but it was those Italian knockoffs that forced me to re-evaluate them. I think there may have even been a thread about this a few years back, but there was a reason guys like Stallone and Schwarzenegger became stars. They made some pretty damn good movies back in the day, even though they sometimes tend to be subject of ridicule now.

Wow, looks like a good one. I wonder if the $$$ 300 made spurred them to up the ante on the violence?

I'm with you on this 100%, Dave. Even among other fans of bad movies, I just couldn't bring myself to admit being a big fan of the ballsy 80's action movie.

edit: Now having seen that trailer... DAMN! At the two minute mark, that trailer becomes completely awesome!

There's a new Die Hard coming AND a new Rambo. I don't really know what to do with myself. If they announced another Robocop sequel I'd pass out right now.

Also, to jump on the Strike Commando bandwagon. I downloaded a boot of it a few years ago and only got around to watching it last year. Fucking hilarious, all the way around. Makes me wonder what Reb Brown is up to these days. Between this and Space Mutiny, he couldn't seem to catch a break.

I'm all over this one and can't wait for next weekend to get here. I haven't seen his new Rocky movie (not a big Rocky fan...have only seen 3 and 4), but I saw a TV spot for RAMBO awhile back and it looked promising. I really dug the first two Rambo flicks (especially part 2) and thought the third one was ok. Hopefully the revival of his two popular characters will be a good comeback for Sly and help us forget some of the crap he's made over the past decade. Anybody else remember that awful remake of GET CARTER?......wish I didn't!

Yep,next weekend is it for Rambo to return to the big theatrical screen and gorily kill millions of Burmanese soldiers, for hopefully it'll revive Stallone's career and get it fully going again(now that Rocky is permanently retired).

I caught a midnight showing of this last night so here's a 100% spoiler free mini-review. A lot of people aren't going to like this. I, however thought it was awesome! Don't go looking for a message, great acting a huge budget or a deep story with this one. What you will get is an explosive mindless action movie with a body count that surpasses movies like "Commando." The comparisons of the early trailer (still available at WARNING: This will spoil some of the gore scenes ) to the Italian Rambo knockoffs are spot but with a slightly bigger budget. I felt like this was a total throwback to the Golan/Globus days of exploitative action. I highly recommend this to anyone into hyper violent, fast paced, relatively brainless action movies. I have a feeling that the "critics" are going to tear this apart for the very reasons that I enjoyed it.

Wow, Sly does it again! This movie was almost perfect, imo, and more than delivers what any fan of the franchise could possibly have hoped for. This is a definite must see.

Who cares if the plot is simple and basically the same as part 2? It's the action that matters and it's here in spades, accompanied by gore straight outta "Saving Private Ryan". Unlike part two, now when someone gets blown up, you don't just see an explosion and accept that the person is dead without seeing it. Blood and limbs fly!

Want brutality? Maybe it was the setting or the music, but the attack on the village near I the beginning actually had me feeling some the same feelings I had when I first saw "Cannibal Holocaust"! A sickening, "I don't feel good about watching this" kind of feeling. Just pure, savage slaughter of the innocent.

Other things I liked and didn't like:

SPOILERS BELOW:

Realism. Just like in Rocky Balboa, there are plot devices that make you really believe that this 50-something Rambo could pull this off. Though the trailers made it look otherwise, this isn't just Rambo against the world. He has plenty of help with him. And he uses that big ass gun at the end to inflict most of his damage. Many people may not like that it's not the same Rambo with the up-close kills we're used to, but that was 20+ years ago and shouldn't be expected of a man his age now. Kudos again to Sly for not trying to insult our intelligence by going that route.

But one thing I didn't totally care for was the ending. I would have done it differently and two thematic elements that were mentioned earlier in the movie seemed to set it up so. First, the idea of coming full circle is mentioned in the flashback sequence and also Sarah asks Rambo if he's curious about what may have changed back home. So the obvious (and maybe they felt it was too obvious?) ending would be for John to be back in the States, walking down the road and get picked up by some small town sheriff, who instead of being a dick like Sheriff Teasle, actually buys John a meal and thanks him for his service to the country. I know the current war isn't generally the most popular thing going these days, but the climate towards the soldiers themselves sure seems a lot different then when the original story was written. John could see this change and come full circle by once again be a happy US citizen. Maybe that would have been a little sappy, but I think that would have worked much better than having him go home to a father who, to the best of my recollection, was NEVER mentioned in any of the previous movies. I'm not a fan of tacked on plot elements like that.

Caught this at a matinee showing Friday afternoon and really enjoyed it. I had my doubts, but it actually exceeded my expectations. I can't believe the MPAA let this movie slide with an R and keep all of that gore on display. It actually made 300 look tame by comparison. The movie was definitely a lot of fun. For me, it brought about a rush of nostalgia having seen the other Rambo films and other 80's mindless-action flicks when I was younger. I wasn't really bothered by that "happy" ending, but perhaps it was a way to bring proper closure to the series. But if there is another sequel I'll certainly see it and hope it is just a good as this was. I still think the first two are the best (with PART 2 being my personal fave). Anyone who grew up on those and loved them as much as I did should definitely check out this new RAMBO. I'll probably see it again and will definitely add the DVD to my library when it came out.

Wow. I held off on this one for my wife's sake... she wanted to see it with me for an early Valentine. I'm not joking.

To me, this was easily the best since the original--as with ROCKY BALBOA, Stallone has brought an iconic character back into the real world after letting him slide dangerously close to pure fantasy.

Not that RAMBO is an entirely "realistic" film--do not get that impression from what I just said. Oh, there's "over the top" to spare... but we'll get to that momentarily.

The favorite review quote I read before actually seeing this latest RAMBO was something along the lines of "the violence is occasionally interrupted by a movie." Fair enough--there's more than enough wall-to-wall gore to spare--then again, the stuff you're seeing at the very beginning of the film is real. And no matter how exploitative the atrocity footage becomes later in the film, Stallone's got an airtight excuse... YOU stand up and say that such things aren't really happening.

We've seen John Rambo as the symbol of the soldier forgotten by his country. And we've seen him become a comic-book superhero doing his cinematic part to go back and win in Vietnam and right wrongs elsewhere (even if he never DID get the appreciation he craved--Stallone's too smart to play these fantasies exclusively to one political camp over the other).

And now? As I said, reality. There's nothing WRONG with the relief workers wanting to do some good where terrible things are happening. But Rambo knows that it's not going to change anything... nor is it "attitudes like his" that keep things going the way they are. He agrees to the first mission out of respect for the woman who believes that her actions, however universally ineffectual, are good and right. And he takes the rescue mission because he's the one that knows the way back.

He's not going to change the world, but he's going to do the right thing when senseless cruelty takes place in front of him. He's going to do what he was trained to do--not in the name of his country, but in the name of what's good and right.

And you can take that primal urge all the way back to the playground... you'll never change the fact that there are bullies in the world, and you'll never make it your job to patrol the playgrounds of the world in order to stop them, but if you see a bully terrorizing an innocent child, are you going to do the right thing then and there?

THAT'S the button Stallone pushes here--and he pushes it expertly. Naturally, we can see where SOME of it's going too easily (you think the finger-pointing pacifist who says that killing is NEVER justified will make it to the end credits without using lethal violence himself?), but that's still the way stories are told--and while the dilemma and the attitude are rooted in grim reality, there's still the fantasy element--where you're the one who can DO something. Sure, you can take it to the debate table later. We can have coffee and discuss the philosophy of violence if you'd like. But something tells me that you won't be formulating your debate while RAMBO is in progress.
