James Wan's big "return to horror" was utter dogshit. If they were trying to do an 80's style campy slasher-ish horror film they tried way too hard. Sure, it had some moments of cool cinematography and lighting but everything else was just bad. Horrible acting, super weak story, terrible CG gore, lots of cheap jump scares, and an overly bombastic score. "Malignant" was just dumb. Style over substance can work, but when the style is also crap there is only failure.

As a disclaimer, this opinion comes from a fan of tons of cheap, crappy, horror films from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. What's the difference? The cheap crappy films I am a fan of had heart and were fun. Zombie vs shark in "Zombie?" Dumb as hell, but awesome. "Malignant" made that look like "The Godfather" or something. "Hell of the Living Dead" is high art compared to this for crying out loud.

If you're going to subject yourself to this watch it on Max or pirate it. Don't spend a dime as that will merely motivate them to make this the next "big" franchise.
