Let The Right One In

Post by DylanDog »

Another limited release foreign movie, Sweden's take on the vampire genre may not live up to all it's hype, but is a worthy view if you get the chance. However, it's one of those movies that I like a lot more while I'm watching it than I do when I reflect back on it after the fact.

Is it a good vampire movie? Yes.

Is it a good coming of age story? Yes.

But ultimately, I felt that there was way too much emphasis on sexuality and gender issues and that overshadowed an otherwise good, simple story. I felt that the big 'shock' scene subtracted from, rather than added to, this movie's power.

There were some good ideas (ever wonder what would happen if a vampire entered without being invited?) and some bad (cat attack!), but overall it's worth a look.

Agreed--and I'm glad I finally caught this.

I deliberately avoided all of the hype and spoilers as I had a feeling that this would work best completely sans preparation... I knew the "V-word" was involved and I anticipated that this would be more my speed than "Twilight," which I left to my daughter.

Beyond that, it was a fresh experience and, as it turned out, a very rewarding one. Superlative performances from the young actors, the sheer, palpable empathy for the bullying victim, thoughts of vicious revenge, respect for the established vampire mythos--and some excellent shock sequences, to boot!

So get ready for the remake (sigh)... or, if you're more adventurous than that, seek this one out immediately!

Man, it's times like these that I curse living out in the sticks. I'll be waiting for DVD. As a matter of fact, I have to wait for the whole Six Shooter series to hit DVD before I get to see this and Time Crimes.

My brother caught it and liked it quite a bit but kept insisting, as if he was going to change my mind about wanting to check it out, that it was absolutely, in no way a horror movie. I suspect that he might be partially right.

Absolutely, in no way, a horror movie? That's a bit off base. Yes, it's a "sensitive coming of age" movie, but unlike TWLIGHT, this one is also an R-rated "shocker" with scare scenes and gore scenes involving supernatural vampirism and deviant behavior... I'd have no trouble calling it a "horror movie."

Went to see this yesterday and enjoyed it. Didn't think it was as amazing as the hype made it out to be, but still glad I was able to catch it.

Gonna keep my eye out on the young female lead. She was fantastic... so haunting.

And I'm sorry, kitty scene had me rofl... too silly! :D
