Diversity. If I want thick and evil, I use my fingers, if I want a tight keep up with the guitarist feel, bring on the pick. (I use a Dunlop .80 -The black ones)same ones I use for guitar
The way I see it, you do whats best for the song. Pick, finger, slap, a little distortion and a screw driver if yer nasty.
I think finger Elitists are just selling them selves short.
A lot of celebrated Bass players use picks from time to time (Geddy Lee for instance) there is no need to be ashamed :p

I played with a pick for about the first year I started playing. I dropped them all the time. One day I stopped 'picking' them up. There are some songs that doesn't sound right without a pick. Its true.

Come on people, we're talking about "bassplaying" here. It's not like we're talking about actual musicians. Let the bassplayers play with a pick, keep their self esteem up a little bit so that the guitarists don't have to do more work than they already do.

Regards,

Jonathan

"Work" and "guitarists" don't really go together Jonny boy, kinda like "rich" and "hippie" or "groupie" and "death metal"

The only "investment" with a guaranteed high rate of return is EDUCATION. Go rent a cheap shack and get your asses back to college or trade school. Don't come out until you're not stupid anymore~ Pat the Wise!

That's because all of our attributes are musically related. Bassists don't have those musical attributes, so they can focus more on work, groupies, gay sex, and granola. Guitarists don't have time for that fun stuff. Too busy being musical musicians playing music, musically.

Dont think Ive even picked up my bass in 6 months. Not like I knew how to play it anyway. But if I did Im sure Id have to use a pick after about 3 or 4 songs.

I go for the best sound. Most of the time fingers get just that, but sometimes it takes a pick. I don't care what you, or anyone else thinks about what I do.
dont take it personally, just taking a stab at bass players everywhere,i'd just like to find one who actually showed up to practice!

I can count on one hand the times I've missed a scheduled practice in the 19 years that I've been playing. I never thought about it before but that's a pretty fuckin' good record if I do say so myself.

It's not the type of instrument played, it's the type of person playing the instrument.
