I don't really know shit about it, but I came across this series of videos @ http://www.vbs.tv/video.php?id=769427891 and found it interesting and thought some folks here might be interested too. Or everybody's already seen it and I'm the last one...

VBS: Peter, this project wasn't just a one-off for you, you've been documenting the Norwegian Black Metal scene for a while. How did you hook up with all these guys?

Peter Beste: In April 2002 I went over there for the first time, and I've gone back a couple of times since. I went to a few metal shows when I lived in Austin. I saw Gorgoroth, and folks like Dimmu Borgir and Enslaved. I took a few pictures of them, sent them to the guys in the band and told them I wanted to come to Norway and work on this little project. Slowly but surely they let me in;I'd meet one guy and become friendly, then he'd give me other guys' numbers, and it kind of snowballed from there. By the second year I pretty much knew everybody I needed to meet, and now I'm just getting to know them better every visit.

Wow, that was pretty freakin' cool! Man, talk about an uncomfortable silence there at the end. Yeesh...

I can't say I've been the biggest fan of "black metal" over the years. I always thought it was just a bunch of dorks who took themselves way too seriously and never learned how to play their instruments (nor have an ear for decent production). Mostly because whenever I met someone into that whole scene that's exactly what they were. Just sheep who were merely following a trend. However, lately I've been taking a bigger interest in the style and some of the more well known black metal bands and I've come to discover that these guys are freakin' serious and some of them actually have a valid knowledge about what their talking about.

It's very interesting to say the least. Also check out the new pictorial book by Peter Beste also titled "True Norwegian Black Metal". I was paging through it the other day at Barnes and Noble and it contains some pretty powerful images.

However, I do wish some of them would take a lesson from Behemoth and see that you can play with proficiency, have good production and still be evil as all fuck!

Are you referring about Odinism?

He never seems to wear any of the symbols that go with that Religion or any of the Norse Religions, now that I think about it.

Satanic images or references is support of the Christian religion. That's what Euronymous used to say in his letters back in the day. I always thought that was odd, seeing he worshipped Bathory so much, especially the first 3 LPS.

It was a DVD that Billzebub put out on Black Metal. You can find it on Netflix. He did a great one on Death Metal and Thrash also.

I never had even heard of them but was trying to see if the new Black Metal Documentary was out on Netflix. Check it out.

It's a good interview and has some great interviews with Abbath from Immortal.
