The last thing you want to see while camping...

Take a minute and stare at this picture... this is what imminent death looks like.

Michio Hoshino, a photographer known for his pictures of bears and other wildlife, was mauled to death by a brown bear on the Kamchatka Peninsula in eastern Russia. He was in his mid-40?s and lived in Fairbanks, Alaska.

This is the last photo he took.

When I was a kid we used to go to Yosemite every summer for a couple weeks. They have black bears there and there are warnings about keeping your food secure. It used to mean just keeping your food locked up in the car but it seems like the bears have figured out how to disassemble a car to get to the food inside, so they provide heavy duty steel lockers to put your food in now.

At any rate, when I was 12 we were camping on the valley floor there and the neighbors were a young couple who obviously weren't too bright, ignored the warnings about leaving food out or keeping it in the tent.

They showed up a couple days after us, set up a big fancy tent. The first night they were there, my pop woke me up at about 2 in the morning, laughing his ass off. Their tent was collapsed down, and a mama bear and two cubs were rummaging around inside it. they had already made a mess of the peoples campsite, trash everywhere and such. When mama and cubs finally wandered away, they two people in the tent came crawling out, packed up what they could and were gone by the time the sun came up.

Stupid yuppies.

Pffft...hoax.

"according to the New York Times obits, the Japanese newspaper Mainichi reported ''Hoshino was attacked by the bear in his tent on the bank of a lake at about 4 A.M.,'' the newspaper said. The other team members ''heard Hoshino's screams and came running, but the bear dashed into the woods dragging Hoshino,'"

And here's the bear's head: http://files.nireblog.com/blogs3/dinoal ... _bear2.jpg

That picture looks like a total Photoshop work.

Wellllll SHIT. Still, looked like a pretty convincing Photoshop job.

Where'd you get that quote from, by the way?

It's a good one, but it looked too in focus for what was being described to me.
