When I was a little kid my grandma had these little purple/black motherfuckers growing in her garden, bout the size of the end of your pinky finger. She would eat them fresh off the vine. Once, my uncle decided to add some to the giant weekly batch of spaghetti sauce. Chopped one up and tossed it in the pot. It polluted the entire batch, about maybe 1-1/2 gallons. Nobody but my grandma could eat it.
Dunno what kind of pepper that was but it was my first introduction to super spicy food. My mouth was burning for hours after that. Have since learned to respect the flavor they can add, and not put too much of that shit in anything. The only really effective neutralizer for the pepper is Sherbet, not ice cream.

Also, I wouldn't doubt that the kickback from the rifle that other guy took to the face broke his jaw or fractured his cheakbone.. or both.
