Well, THIS doesn't happen too often... I liked it better than the book!
SECRET WINDOW, SECRET GARDEN was never my favorite Stephen King story... THE LIBRARY POLICE (also in the FOUR PAST MIDNIGHT collection) was essentially a short version of IT, while SS,SG was essentially a short version of... well, I won't spell it out, but the casting of one of the supporting characters in the film version ought to really raise your eyebrows if you believe in coincidence!
I quite like Stephen King by and large, and I'm even following KINGDOM HOSPITAL with mild amusement--this just wasn't something I'd put near the top of the heap. And knowing the story to begin with, I expected to be thrilled very little by a movie version.
But Johnny Depp, John Turturro, the director of STIR OF ECHOES... well, damned if they didn't pull it off. This is one thoroughly entertaining movie, and don't let the PG-13 rating put you off, either--this doesn't need gore to be harsh.
Normally, here's where I'd say "the less you know ahead of time, the better." But in this case, even if you DO know too much ahead of time, there are still plenty of reasons to check out SECRET WINDOW. Let me know what you think.
